Mobile phones have made its mark as a necessity nowadays and with companies such as Nokia, Sony Ericsson and Motorola continuously tried to create alluring and innovative enhancements to their mobile units and try to outdo each other.

Unlike in the early days, all that was required was a means of being able to communicate wherever they are. Then came the size of a unit after which the boom of text messaging made its mark. The capability of a phone to take pictures with built-in cameras followed suit and so on, until today where technology has totally taken its stand with regards to ideal phones by the masses.

Today, the enhancements, features and different capabilities of cellular phones have made their mark to distinguish each phone from another. Flip phones, video capturing and colored screens with specific resolutions have been the talk of the town anywhere in the world. But one thing that has been totally overlooked is for a phone to be able to help in communication by anyone in the world especially when the need to be far from the people they love.

So the next time you consider buying a cellular phone, think about it. Do you really need all these features or simply because people are falling for them for no apparent reason? The answer lies on how a person needs such devices, but if not, why go for such phones that are simply the same for mobile communication all the same.

Laptops like most consumer electronic goods are hard and sensitive to shock and even the most expensive ones which use some of the best technology can offer in terms of shock protection. Then comes the ability to produce electronics circuits onto flexible substrates that would allow them to bend and twist without damaging the circuitry and other electronics parts which could herald the age of the less sensitive electronic products. These products are already in use but the future holds more surprises such as the flexible laptop that won’t cease to function after you kinda’ sat on when you were on the bus.
These flexible gadgets and gizmos (OLED’s for example are just some of the exciting new fields of applications for these flexible electronics) would be better for you can’t fathom the amount of abuse we subject current gadgets nowadays. The cellphone that prevented your car door from closing, the iPod that fell out of your pocket while you were skateboarding and many other crazy stuff that would all fall as “out of the terms and conditions of reasonable use” that not only invalidates the warranty but utterly removes all hopes of future repair. Having flexible electronics would allow these gadgets to withstand the twisting and wrestling they undergo in out pockets as we scramble to stuff them full with all the other must have gadgets every time you step out of that door into the world.

Wherever I go, I like making sure that I would be able to find a WiFi signal. This is especially true if I am going away for more than a day trip. Of course, it can be awkward to go around waving your laptop or whatever WiFi ready gadget just to find a decent signal.

Thank the heavens for the guys at Think Geek. First the created the WiFi detector shirt. Now they have another accessory that can do the trick for any WiFi seeking dude: the WiFi detector cap.

This cool gadget is the perfect juxtaposition of apparel and technology. It looks just like most any other cap that you can find at the stores. Of course, there is something different about it – there are bars on the front of the cap to indicate the strength of the WiFi signal in any given area. The stronger the WiFi signal in the area, the more glowing bars you will see on the cap.

I can just imagine wearing this cap the next time I go out…no waving the iPhone around. Of course, you might have a problem if you are out alone and you want to keep wearing your cap. Since the indicator is on the front of the cap, you can’t really see the signal when you’re wearing it, right? I guess I would just have to get the cap and give it as a gift and watch the detector from there.

Anyway, it’s just $14.99 at Think Geek.

The invention is now celebrating its 50 year anniversary and many have used it yet not even known the name of the humble hook and loop thingy that makes the distinct rip sound without actually ripping, VELCRO. As it turns out, the product was initially patented by a Swiss engineer, George de Menstral in 1941 while on a hunting trip in Switzerland. He was intrigued at how cocklebur seeds clung to his socks and dog by the way and wondered what significance a product that could mimic the said seed and the wonders it would do for daily life, he let it off as another idea into the magic bag of tricks. After a decade, he came about the idea again and became serious about the incident and started work on a man-made equivalent to the errant seed that stuck to almost anything.
Under the microscope, the cocklebur seeds had many tiny hooks that clung or hooked onto the woolen pants that he was wearing that one day he was hunting in the Swiss mountains. Wool as we all know is made from fibers out of the coats of sheep and they had a natural loop that allowed the bush’s seeds to hook onto. He first tried to make the device out of cotton which failed, settling on nylon as a better solution to the problem. The nylon was spun and then cut to form the hooks that were needed to closing to the loops which was made of fibers loosely wound onto a mesh packing. The invention failed to catch on for a while for fashion designers saw it as ugly and very unappealing for their clothing lines. The only people who loved the stuff were those guys in space who hated the hassle of having to do zippers in space as they put on and off their space suits.
Little did people know that the stuff is to become mainstay of sneakers and much other stuff we take for granted today. Nearly all models of shoes have a piece of Velcro on them and modern life would be impossible without it. It has you sealing up the duffel bag you carry your stuff in, it holds your tents and other stuff together, car seats are held up by them and of course the sneakers which have benefited the shoelace challenged folks of this earth for so long. Out with the lace and in with the rip, the ripping Velcro that is. Many fail to see that Velcro is a brand name and refer to all those fasteners on the market as such. Little do they know that the brand has existed for quite some time and that may be the reason why infomercials refer to them as simply fasteners or hook and loop fasteners.

Then you’ve gotta’ have one of these cool tshirts that are all the rage today. Star trek is one of the most influential and popular science fiction films and TV series of all time. They have inspired many a scientist and engineers to become who they are today at the lead of the space race. From the latest installment to the film, Beginnings to the vintage shirts of yesteryear’s that takes us back in time to the days when Spock and Kirk ruled space. Nostalgic as it may seem, the science fiction film has so influenced pop culture many of the high tech gadgets and gizmos we have today are patterned and designed similar to the ones they used.
Space travel has always been a dream for many and with today’s space tourism beginning to take foot in the annals of space history, time will come when we ourselves would be zooming through space. Call it nostalgia or plain simple good stuff, the TV series was initially seen as a flop that it was not held to heart by the makers of the show. Little did they know that the tech-savvy crew of the USS Enterprise would be known and hailed as some of the most creative and influencing factors of today’s day and age. Gene Roddenberry and his wife, along with Jim Dougan who played Scottie in the series are some of the select few who have been buried in space, the place they called home in fantasy and till eternity. Be part of the history that is Star Trek and get hold of the coolest Star Trek Tees around, to boldly go where no man has ever gone! Beam me up Scottie!

The influx of the Plasma television in recent years has totally changed the face of home entertainment. Unlike in the olden days where people would be satisfied with the usual standard CRT television sets, the fad today is that of progressive screening and clarity for comfort and of course quality lifestyle.

Plasma Televisions do not come cheap. They cost roughly thrice the price of a normal television set. With the various brands such as Sony, Pioneer, Samsung and AOC fighting for supremacy of the consumer nod, each would have their own version. Of the brands, it is of course Sony that still leads the race for the proven brand. But the other brands cannot be taken for granted. They have had their own share of patrons and this is not only because of price but more on the quality of their plasma TV product today.

It won’t take long before everyone would be craving to have their own plasma TV at home. Taiwan for example goes as far as having them in all their elevators today, much made from different brands. But in reality, it has become psychological that plasma TV ownership becomes a status symbol as well.

Everyone is aware that the fast evolution of technology has led many people to simply buy computers at the cheapest possible price available today. There are some technically conscious people who are quite particular about the technical specifications of most parts of their personal computer such as the processor, video card and memory modules.

But realistically, at the rate that such parts are being introduced in the market and then seen to be obsolete after some days is driving most people crazy with regards to the proper computer to purchase.

Actually, some computers, like the Pentium IV series are still good to go to this day. There is no need to go for such high-end and expensive specifications such as the Pentium Dual Core series if they are not needed. For the people who would buy their own sets today, then it would be feasible, but for people who have barely had a year to fully use and depreciate their own computer sets, it would be best to settle down and consider upgrading only after some years.

At the height that people are becoming cost conscious, the rate at which technology is changing should not be a basis for hooking up with change as well, especially if it is not really needed.

The continuous efforts of cybernetics in recent years has had everyone thinking, will the time come that cybernetic creations known as robots to many, and man co-exist? Speculations such as this have drawn some peaceful and violent reactions that are largely dependent on how people would assess the possibility. But on thing that is for sure, the issue about power is within the topics for discussion.

The influx of the idea of robots in society has drawn various reactions. But among them, it seems like security and programming has been the most notable issue above all. Humans play God in creating them and from all indications, it shall man who will be at the top of things as well unless robots would be able to develop their own ways of thinking and feelings.

There are various automations that are in use today and these are close to indications of technology slowly rising to the occasion and making life easier for people. However, robots are another issue since it would all depend on how they would be used and for what purpose they shall be once they are introduced to society along side the human race.

Palm Desktop Applications have been one of the common gadgets we see around. To most it helps take the place of the old school style of maintaining planners and appointments while to some, it is simply getting in with the times.

PDAs can be usually seen nearby executives and people who are always on the go. But to seriously use such devices religiously has not been that convincing, considering that it is a gadget that seems to be overrated.

One thing that the PDA has leaned on is technology and reviews according to the people who look for them and own them. Not all people will need a PDA, especially if they are not aware of what it is really for.

Using a Stylus pointer and opening some applications that come with the PDA is perhaps the basic thing to do. Alarms, notes and calculator application, people may eventually ask, why a PDA when people can use their advanced cellular phones today?

People would often have to cram and do immediate research to get a full understanding of a particular area of concern. People have to resort to doing search queries, resorting to periodical content and even reaching down to known reference books such as an Encyclopedia or the Almanac, to be able to get a full overview of what a particular topic or subject matter is all about.

While such is a given, there are people who can give their two cents worth of opinions and stored knowledge as well. This all stems from these individuals who have put emphasis on certain areas of interest that include electronics, travel and history. Not all people are expected to invest such effort and time since every individual would want to cater to a lot of things with nothing particular to specialize in.

Ideally, such knowledge from people which are tagged geeks at some time would go as far as holding technical information such as content, components and workflow processes. Such areas are not given much attention in the normal phase of life. But such are investments to which one day; such stored and solicited knowledge shall be of big use towards other people and big entities who seek better knowledge as well.
