Cooking has got to be one of the most relaxing things that you can engage in. Even after a long day at work, just fiddling around in the kitchen can help you melt all that stress away. Not to mention the fact that you have something wonderful to look forward to when you’re done!

Add to this the fact that the media is also placing a lot of attention on cooking and recipes, it is thus no big surprise that more and more people are spending their time discovering different things to make in the kitchen. With the abundance of celebrity chefs, their own cooking shows, and recipe portals, the average person also gets more enticed to experiment more than usual with their cooking.

The trend, in fact, is for people to make these recipe web sites their go-to solution when in need of ideas for dishes. Even those who are already experienced in the kitchen still make it a point to visit recipe and cooking web sites for inspiration. And when it comes to recipe web sites, there is a ton to choose from. There is, however, a new player in the scene which can give you more than your usual recipe web site: Recipe Finder.

Recipe Finder is a search engine that specializes in bringing you the best recipes found online. It has the largest collection of recipes – over a million of them! And in spite of this humongous collection, you can still find your desired recipe very quickly. Finding a recipe is a simple matter of entering the recipe name or the main ingredient. But if you want things to be more specific, you can also narrow down your search by indicating ingredients that you want to be excluded, calorie count, cook time, and the number of servings. You also have control over how you want the recipe results to be displayed – either as text or as images.

The recipe search engine is not simply about discovering recipes. It also gives you some help in the organizational front via two features. One, you have the menu feature, which allows you to create your own menu. This can include the appetizer, main courses, and dessert. Two, you have the calendar feature, which helps you plan entire meals in advance.

Recipe Finder does not overlook the social aspect that many users look for today. For recipes that are simply too good to keep to yourself, they can be shared via different platforms. More so, the recipes can also be printed out – the perfect choice for those who still want hard copies!

This year is special though – the iPhone 5 is pretty much set to fix everything that was wrong with the previous versions, and establish Apple’s name on the mobile market for good. It’s been a bumpy road, but all of Apple’s fans are eagerly awaiting the new Holy Grail of gadgets.

Any true geek is already planning what they’ll be doing with their own copy of the new toy – it’ll be great for pretty much everything that a smartphone has to do these days. Browsing is, of course, a main feature – and with the added multitasking capabilities it’s going to be even more convenient and easy to do. There are some rumors that Apple have put extra special effort into coming up with a solid music playback system in the new iPhone, though the rumors about an integrated audio modulating chip still haven’t been confirmed.

The new screen looks like it’s going to please many people too – the added protection and the extra picture clarity (inheriting from the already successful previous incarnations of the device) are going to pretty much swipe the competition at once. There will inevitably be some great Vodafone iPhone 5 deals available as soon as the device rolls out as well, so you should be able to get it at a reasonable price. So, are you hyped up for one of this year’s most important events in the geek community?

Well, diamonds have long been revered and acknowledged to be the hardest substance on earth that the only thing capable of cutting it would be another diamond. Diamonds if you don’t know are made from carbon through which the millions of years under intense pressure and heat in the earth’s crust has transformed it into a very tough symmetric crystal that is almost indestructible. It cut’s glass and has a sense of mystique breaking up light into the many wavelengths that show up as the colors of the rainbow.

Then scientists and material manufacturing experts who have been experimenting with the production of artificial diamonds in laboratories and industrial complexes producing diamonds of industrial grade come up with a reliable and repeatable method for doing so. The second largest use for diamonds are for industry where they are used in abrasives/drills, Semi-conductors and coatings for optics giving them an almost scratch-proof finish, the first being for jewelry. That is why scientists have developed ways to manufacture them in the lab, taking only days rather than thousands or millions of years. These diamonds are at the microscopic level and they have also found it to be one of the best conductors of heat and around. Disks of diamonds that result from man-made processes can cut through ice with only the body’s heat transmitted through the finger compared to gold, silver or aluminum (today’s most widely used heat dissipation products). This makes it a candidate for future heat sinks and other technologies that would require heat removal such as cooling systems for super computers and such. Costs are still quite high so doing expect to see a diamond based cooling system for your PC but they are developing applications for these man-made gems.

Gemologists have argued that the influx of man-made diamonds is a threat to the value and standing of natural diamonds that they may someday be impossible to tell apart. The only give away of an artificially made gem is that it is too perfect. Perfect color (which can be blue, yellow, clear and many other shades depending on the minerals that were present in the carbon as it crystallized) and the absence of cleavages or cracks and flaws are the main giveaways. They are also seeking to have trace elements to be included in the carbon mixture to give some form of detection method making it easier to recognize a real gem from the rest.

OK so wow, Recipe Finder! It’s a brand new site that helps people sift through the many recipes available on the Internet — over 1,121,131 recipes and counting as of this writing. Actually if you do some poking around, Recipe Finder is an actual search engine specifically designed to crawl the web for food items. Like in Google where you can customize search by images or timeliness, Recipe Finder can sift through the web using length of time prepared, serving size and calorie count. But today that’s not important — we’re here to see whether this baby can scour the web for the odd stuff. You know how the oddest of things can be found on the Internet — so let’s see what the deepest recesses of the web can bring forth to the dining table

I wonder if they have recipes for cannibals.

With over 1 million recipes, there’s probably something out there that’s really obscure. Let’s do a quick search for “people.”

Ah OK. Figures. Gingerbread people, meals for two “people” .. but wait a minute. What’s this on the sidebar under “suggested.”

Oh my god! Could it be? They’re actually serving meals for “people eaters.” This I’ve got to see.

Ah bullcrap. Cute though. You may be too young for this but, the “Purple People Eater” was a meme back in the 1950′s based on a song about a purple monster that wanted to become part of a rock and roll band. Yeah.

Okay moving on. So we definitely can’t find cannibals. Let’s see if we can find something controversial to the tastes of organizations like Green Peace. Let’s go for sharks. As you may or may now be aware, shark finning is considered illegal in a lot of places around the world. Here’s a short primer to help you understand the role of sharks in our oceans. So, after scouring the 1 million + database, we’re left with a couple of entries — two seem to be legitimate recipes for shark fillet. And this other one, a cocktail drink.

Fascinating. It’s covered. Moving on.

I wanted to see if they kept recipes of domesticated animals like dogs, but the results predictably showed a ton of results for hotdogs, corn dogs and other fancy party fanfare. So then we move on to cats. Everybody loves cats. They’re on the Internet. But are they on Recipe Finder?!

Tadah! Okay so maybe Cat Poop Cookies isn’t what we had in mind but yay to humanity for not succumbing to the evils of presenting felines at the dinner table.

That was an interesting short experiment. My overall verdict is that yeah, you can really dick around this search engine and find the really obscure stuff but kudos to the team for building a rather interestingly huge database collection of food!

You’ve got the latest surveillance camera, even the best James Bond suit. So you think you’re spy-smart? You can’t even figure out who owns that mysterious number that rang your phone last night. Don’t despair because there is a way—the reverse phone lookup.

Think of this like browsing through a telephone directory, only that instead of name, you will be looking for numbers. That’s why it’s called “reverse” lookup. Only professionals who respond to emergencies, like the police, are given copies of reverse telephone directories. But don’t worry because you don’t need that directory. There are online sources that you can use for your investigation.

Using reverse phone lookup services online are as easy as searching from a database. You sure know how to do that—simply enter the number, hit the button, and wait for the result. You’re even luckier if it’s a landline number because free lookup services are there to help you. Information like name, address, map, and age of the owner will be instantly yours without spending a dime. Even international numbers can be checked as long as they’re in the database.

The only limitation is that you can’t search for mobile phone numbers for free, but for a fee. Well if your case is worth every penny, then go on and invest for it. But there’s no guarantee that you can obtain your needed information. The rule is that, if you can’t look up the number on Google, then it’s most likely that the online service doesn’t have that either. So the smartest thing to do is to stick with the free reverse phone lookup and just enjoy what this can offer while it’s still free.

Laptops like most consumer electronic goods are hard and sensitive to shock and even the most expensive ones which use some of the best technology can offer in terms of shock protection. Then comes the ability to produce electronics circuits onto flexible substrates that would allow them to bend and twist without damaging the circuitry and other electronics parts which could herald the age of the less sensitive electronic products. These products are already in use but the future holds more surprises such as the flexible laptop that won’t cease to function after you kinda’ sat on when you were on the bus.
These flexible gadgets and gizmos (OLED’s for example are just some of the exciting new fields of applications for these flexible electronics) would be better for you can’t fathom the amount of abuse we subject current gadgets nowadays. The cellphone that prevented your car door from closing, the iPod that fell out of your pocket while you were skateboarding and many other crazy stuff that would all fall as “out of the terms and conditions of reasonable use” that not only invalidates the warranty but utterly removes all hopes of future repair. Having flexible electronics would allow these gadgets to withstand the twisting and wrestling they undergo in out pockets as we scramble to stuff them full with all the other must have gadgets every time you step out of that door into the world.

It’s not technical, it’s uncomplicated and it’s plain and simple enjoyment with the family. We don’t always have the luxury of focusing on family but what better time to be passionate about yours, than a time like now when the economy is on the rocks and stresses abound. Sound crazy, don’t count us out yet for stress is the number one cause of disease on this planet and is one thing all of us geeks could use a lot less of.
Whether you go on vacation to some far away land or go out of town to a local place you all enjoy, the outcome should always be the same, family time. Being passionate of your family is one of the most neglected ideals of this time and age for we are all so obsessed with making money and buying stuff. Have you ever noticed that the cheapest and most simple ideas make the best impressions on your kids. Those times when everybody seems to get caught up in the moment for no reason at all and everybody remembers as it were yesterday sending everybody to stop what they’re doing and simply talk and reminisce. Now that’s some thing to live for and remember, like the trip to New Jersey you took where everybody just had fun in sun and surf.
Come on people, learn to live again and spend some time with the people you love about the most and stop caring about everything else for a moment and begin living again, begin being human again.
Or maybe I should say nerdom. I just read this post over at Forever Geek, talking about how a professor is proposing to ban the words “geek” and “nerd.” Why? He says that their use merely helps in propagating the negative connotations that have always been associated with them. He says this despite the fact that more and more people are starting to get into the idea of “cool geeks” or “cool nerds.”

David Anderegg, professor of psychology from Bennington College, says that these terms are derogatory and liken them to racial slurs. His opinion is that even if we try to make these terms cool, it only highlights the fact that they are of a negative nature.

Now I am no professor, but my take on this is that there is NO NEED to ban “geek” or “nerd.” Turn your television on and what do you see? Music geeks dancing and singing on Glee. We have geeks – and nerds as well – making us laugh till we bust our seams on The Big Bang Theory. Even shows which are not mainly focused on geeks and nerds have at least one character that fits the description. Think Criminal Minds. I love Spencer Reid, don’t you? Penelope Garcia?

If our society is slowly – or maybe not even that slowly – opening itself to the idea of cool and fun geeks and nerds, why should be even consider banning the words? Do they offend you? I certainly am not offended!
