Nope, it’s not a disease, but rather the stark realization that your old vinyl records, VHS Tapes and black and white photos are fast becoming obsolete and forever destined for the garbage can. There is help though for the many baby boomers out there who do need help with such conversions in order for most analog gadgets and gizmos to have their contents converted into the proper digital format that would allow them to be used with your iPod or saved onto high quality DVD’s for eternity (well, not an eternity but as long as the DVD retains it’s ability to hold the information safe anyway for even they have life spans or expected time frames before they fail). Many technologies such as voice recordings on cassette tapes, old video on reel tapes, Black and white photos of the days of old and many other older analog technologies that have long been overstepped by the digital revolution.
For photos there are scanners that allow you to digitize them and convert them to your preferred format for storage and viewing. Old photos are sensitive and some even crumble due to time and climate conditions. Digitizing them makes them available for manipulation and restorations as well as playback as a slideshow on your PC or TV. Old VHS tapes can be digitized through several appliances you connect to the video in port or through the USB port that with accompanying software allows them to be converted into digital video formats and even DVD’s (this you’d best leave to the experts for it takes almost a day to convert a few hours of video but DIY is still possible and widely available). Old 8″ vinyl can be transferred onto your multimedia players through similar appliances that converts them to popular audio formats.
Lastly, this world is ruled by the law of supply and demand and as long as people need help with such analog to digital conversions, there will always be entrepreneurs who would provide the services necessary. Whether you aim to do it on your own or to hire a professional conversion firm, it’s up to you, but do it quick for technology changes as a very fast rate that it may again render today’s technology useless by tomorrow.

I’m sure you have a printer at home. It’s small, compact, and does the job for you. Well, it does the job for you most of the time, I guess. I’m sure you get your print outs in between cursing the printer gods for yet another paper jam or spooling loop hell. It’s great, I guess. So maybe you’re one of those people who might think that an A3 printer scanner might be the right one for them. Let’s check out how an A3 printer might be better than the current printer.

The most obvious advantage is, of course, more versatility in sizes. From the name, an A3 printer can print up to a maximum size of 17″ x 11″ which is the standard dimension of an A3 paper. If you think that your desktop printer can do that, I advise you to double check, as not all desktop printers can do that. With an A3 printer you can print a whole lot of stuff other than Word documents! Think of the possibilities. You can use an A3 printer to make newsletters, posters, banners, and whatever else you need – as long as you don’t exceed 17″ x 11″, of course. However, I think you’d have a problem finding anything to print that is larger than A3. It’s huge, and I do mean huge.

Now if you’ve given it thought and have come to the conclusion that an A3 printer is suitable for your needs, I advise you to go ahead and get one. however, I guess you’ll have a problem making a choice on what brand to buy – there are a lot out there. I don’t think it matters though – whatever brand you choose, be it HP, Canon, Lexmark, Epson, or a Brother A3 printer, you are bound to have more flexibility in the end.

Everyone is aware that the fast evolution of technology has led many people to simply buy computers at the cheapest possible price available today. There are some technically conscious people who are quite particular about the technical specifications of most parts of their personal computer such as the processor, video card and memory modules.

But realistically, at the rate that such parts are being introduced in the market and then seen to be obsolete after some days is driving most people crazy with regards to the proper computer to purchase.

Actually, some computers, like the Pentium IV series are still good to go to this day. There is no need to go for such high-end and expensive specifications such as the Pentium Dual Core series if they are not needed. For the people who would buy their own sets today, then it would be feasible, but for people who have barely had a year to fully use and depreciate their own computer sets, it would be best to settle down and consider upgrading only after some years.

At the height that people are becoming cost conscious, the rate at which technology is changing should not be a basis for hooking up with change as well, especially if it is not really needed.

People would often have to cram and do immediate research to get a full understanding of a particular area of concern. People have to resort to doing search queries, resorting to periodical content and even reaching down to known reference books such as an Encyclopedia or the Almanac, to be able to get a full overview of what a particular topic or subject matter is all about.

While such is a given, there are people who can give their two cents worth of opinions and stored knowledge as well. This all stems from these individuals who have put emphasis on certain areas of interest that include electronics, travel and history. Not all people are expected to invest such effort and time since every individual would want to cater to a lot of things with nothing particular to specialize in.

Ideally, such knowledge from people which are tagged geeks at some time would go as far as holding technical information such as content, components and workflow processes. Such areas are not given much attention in the normal phase of life. But such are investments to which one day; such stored and solicited knowledge shall be of big use towards other people and big entities who seek better knowledge as well.

If you are a true tech-junkie then you’d have heard about nano-technology and the benefits of these extremely small structures. First of all, products that are based on nano-technology have the advantage of building their traits on the molecular level hence making them more flexible in their applications. Bucky-balls are small spherical structures that have been used from toothpastes to medicated creams that delivers a steady dose of drugs where ever they are applied. Then comes even smaller structures known as nano-wires or extremely small wires that are about 200 NM in diameter that is indeed causing a stir in its potential for applications in the computer memory industry.
Sure, we have 1 gigabyte chips out on the market that are now cheaper than ever but the technology used to produce them has reached its maximum capability and a newer better way of making memory chips in needed if we are to achieve true solid state memory that is void of moving parts which is where most technologies fail in terms of reliability.
Moving parts mean they wear out and hard disks which all computers use as their main data storage method is always prone to fail. Hard disks have gone a long way and they have also broken the terabyte level but with all the moving parts, they are still quite a risk. They are reliable (I have an old Seagate SCSI-1 hard drive that was manufactured in 1996 and still its running strong and true) by all measures but they will and are going to fail as they reach the end of their mechanical parts lives. Bearings, motors and the armature where the drive heads rest on are going to wear out in time and with it comes all the data stored within them.
Solid state memory would have no such moving parts that would wear out and they have the added bonus of having a very small footprint compared to mechanical hard drives (new memory based ultra portable laptops are already on the market). They are also easier to replace and have longer lifespans than other data storage technologies to date and using the newly discovered nano-wires would allow the memory barrier to be pushed more and more allowing more memory capacity onto one chip.
The benefits of such discoveries and breakthroughs might sound too technical but considering the amount of gadgets you lug around with you; your mp3 player, cellular phone, iPods , thumb drives and the many others, they all rely on memory modules for their data storage abilities. Imagine being able to load millions of songs onto a single iPod or better yet, being able to store all the contents of a library onto a set of chips eliminating the use of fragile paper products that decay and lose their integrity over the years, now that’s the future.

The latest hybrids that are on the market cost a tad bit more than the regular gasoline ones (if the price is lower, there might be incentives for manufacturers in that state which gives tax discounts to them for selling these hybrids thus lowering the price commensurately). The proliferation of green technology in the marketplace is not to be viewed as a move towards a totally green earth sometime soon. Most of them are still outrageously priced and it may be some more years before they become affordable enough for the regular JOE. The current economic crisis that is sweeping the globe is not helping either, high gas prices, low property prices, fluctuating money markets and crazy legislation all adds up to one ugly picture so green might have to take the back seat ahead of basic necessities (I wouldn’t buy a new hybrid and shell out a ton of money when my mortgage is on the rocks now would I?).
Laws on how people should live and how business should be conducted to become green is seen by most as a lot of hoopla for legislation is merely a law written on paper that we pay for with our taxes. One guy even expressed his disgust at how lawmakers are telling us to live our lives through laws and such measures when these vital environmental systems which are very much needed are out of reach by those who should be “GREEN”. Why not use the energy and effort used in making these laws into developing industry and the infrastructure that is needed to make the earth safer and greener instead. Congress and the senate spends thousands if not millions of dollars during sessions and hearings just to tell us people whom they should be serving how to live our lives and how much we should pay the government they represent whom we voted into power. Kind of hypocritical, the people we elect, telling us how to live our lives.

The revolution comes with the development of Mobion by MTIMicro, a corporation that developed alternative power sources for today’s power hungry gizmos and gadgets. The fuel cell and supporting technology that they have designed and patented takes the technology to the microscopic level and eliminates much of the troublesome hardware that plagues regular fuel-cells. The design shows that technology can indeed make fuel cells, viable as a commercial product as back-up power source for recharging cellular phones, digital cameras, mobile PC’s, and just about any gadget and gizmo people of today cannot live without. This adds to the list of promising technologies that are currently being offered and are still being refined to make tomorrow a more sustainable gadget rich world that does not rely on the grid for power. Imagine having to go on vacation or a business trip overseas and not have to lug around all the chargers and power cords necessary to keep your gadgets powered up. Like the previously featured solar backpacks and luggage that have built-in solar panels to charge a stand-by battery which in turn gives up it’s charge when you use it to charge your gadgets and gizmo’s, along and the human powered bionic charger the technologies are truly cutting edge and green.

The Mobion mobile fuel cell charger uses a revolutionary direct methanol fuel cell design that uses methanol in cartridges (which can be similar to the ones you use for your paintball guns) which when tested allowed a regular cellular device for about 10 times without running to the wall outlet. This increases the power capabilities of a mobile device by 10%, till the next cartridge that is which if ample supply is available can truly take the road warrior away from the wall socket indefinitely. There are currently two versions of the prototype being previewed, one with a USB power socket on it’s side for some of the more miniaturized devices use the standard for communicating with a host computer and charging. The company is looking for an OEM partner who would ideally be a manufacturer of chargers and re-chargers. The company has signed a deal with Duracell for the marketing and supply of the required methanol-filled cartridges which makes the magic charger work.

The system works like an ordinary fuel cell with a fuel(methanol), ion exchange cells(membranes which facilitate the splitting of the methanol), system that collects and re-injects waste water back into the system, and of course the electronics that manages and makes everything works but on a microscopic scale. The only major difference is the elimination of the standard plumbing which is used to deliver fuel to the cells but instead using proprietary electronics to carry out the process with a micro pump to deliver the fuel straight to the cells for power generation. The cell warms up like a laptop when it is used and there is an evaporator system that cools the whole thing down (which also evaporates excess water which cools the cooling pads).

As the story goes, Microsoft (which is considered to be the biggest corporation in the Information Technology arena) gives a taste of what it plans for Yahoo (one of the biggest and most widely used search engines on earth) on what it’s plans are for this year. But glad as they should be, they say no for they say the offer the company (Microsoft) is bidding for their company is too low. Yes, news has reached the internet that the investors/shareholders of Yahoo have turned down the offer of the software giant well before it has formally been formalized as a true and intentional act.

There has been speculation on the move but Microsoft has again expresses it’s willingness to negotiate and talk with these so-called investors on their stand not to sell. Microsoft has taken this stand way back in the early days of the company when the budding company released Windows as their own gamble in the upcoming personal computer market software boom. With rumors or facts circulating within the industry that the said operating systems which we all know as Windows, was derived from initial work in conjunction with IBM in their OS-Warp series of operating systems which never managed to beat the one released by Microsoft for it beat the industry giant at the initial punch. Microsoft went on to take what it wanted (companies and products) and settled out of court any complainants ending with ownership of either the product or the company itself that made the said products. The conquer and take stance has been known to many in the early days of the Personal computer but has become more and more obscure in today’s world of MP3 players and multi function cellular phones.

The rejection of an industry giant for the offer of Microsoft might provide insight on the company’s future allowing diversity and equal opportunity with all those who partake in the battle that is business. With the economy struggling, the US is said to be already in recession even as the federal government tries to avert such which might be too late and too much out of control. Microsoft, like all US-based companies would have to slow down or trim down it’s ranks to be able to survive this coming economic ‘recession’ which is beginning to take firm hold of the great American Nation.

As expected, these ever shrinking gadgets are turning out to be the hottest and most used gizmo and gadget on the roads today. Whether on the daily commute to and from work or on the road with your buddies for a stroll, these gadgets have become a mainstay of the music kind. Who wouldn’t love these small and totally entertaining gadgets, they’re small, compact and best of all, you can load a couple of hundred tracks of digital audio or a couple of DVD’s to take away the boredom of the ever congested streets all over the world. Congestion has become too much of a problem when millions upon millions of commuters and workers head off to and from work that tempers rarely keep on the benign side.

These extremely small gadgets can fit in your pocket as with the iPod classic and other digital media players such as the Creative Zen and others. Some even clip onto your belt or lapel as you jog along during exercise that they are barely noticeable. They have advanced as fast as memory technology for all these gizmos and gadgets rely on memory modules for data storage. Just imagine, a 1 Gigabyte media player can hold on the average a couple of hundred tracks of digital audio which translates to almost eight hours of enjoyment on the road. Traffic has never been so enjoyable, for they allow us to forget the time and simply close our eyes as we doze along into music bliss.

Once you get home, you can get hold of new tracks for download allowing a never ending variety of music at your fingerprints. So who can resist these tiny music machines who has taken the throne from their early ancestors, the walkman. We will be sharing the daily commute with these gadgets for many more years, well till the time the laptop becomes so small and powerful that there would be no more need for several gadgets to do independent tasks (cell phone, music player, pda’s and portable computers … etc.)

As more and more people become aware of the dangers of environmental degradation and the immense impact it will have on us there are several fronts on which IT is trying to tackle and make technology that is earth-friendly and safer for all of us. Chip manufacturers have long been working and perfecting technology such as micro-processors that consume less power and have the ability to turn off unnecessary components. Intel and AMD are hard at work with the advent of multi-core processors realizing the fact that all the added components are not fully utilized all of the time. This technology has trickled down to consumer electronics that have similar functionality as computers do. Alternative power sources such as wind, wave, geothermal and solar have greatly increased with many countries having a small proportion of their total power derived from them.

The technology isn’t cheap and requires quite an investment and there is also the “What if?” factor which can make or break a project however good the aims may be. Faulty design, investor fallout and many more raise the risks of engaging in earth friendly power generation development. In the Philippines for example, there are a huge number of geothermal power generation projects that have since fallen into disrepair and are not generating their maximum output simply because the government does not have the resources to fund them. Other similar areas such as those in volcanic areas share the same fate.

Green technology is the key to the earth’s future and both visionaries working with scientists are working together in getting us a step closer to greener tech that would surely beat the use of fossil fuels that are becoming more and more scarce due to dwindling supplies.
