Science-Based Toys for Children

June 30, 2013 By Teresa Martinez

Science is best learned with fun. That is a proven fact. What more fun way to learn about science is there than through science-based toys?

Learning Difficulties

The typical reaction of children and even adults when learning about science or any other subject matter is that it is something that is hard to learn. It would be easy to agree with that if one is to look on the scientific terms to be remembered and the scientific processes to be understood. When someone thought that science can be learned through fun and toys, he couldn’t have been more right.

Learning difficulties are first overcome by removing the reason for outright rejection for learning. If it is difficult, we make it easier. If it is boredom. we make it more fun. It would not take a lot explaining to realize that it does not take much to convince a child to take a toy and use it for its intended purpose than ask the same child to read a science textbook. Of course books should not be totally dispensed with. Children just need to be encouraged to do so with some play especially when it comes to younger children.

Sustaining the Interest

Once interest in science learning is awakened, the concentration will be placed on sustaining such interest. Science encourages observation and involvement with the surroundings. Answers to questions are discovered by conducting experiments and tests and rarely because a reference book said so.

It is always wise to start cultivating interest for science at an early age. Encouraging them to do so just gives them options and are not in any way forced. There lies the basis for true science learning.

Science Interest up to Adulthood

There was a time that interest in science was synonymous to geekiness. It is no longer so now considering the great contributions to development of those who chose to specialize in it. The people of today owe much to well-renowned scientists who may have started with science-based toys at one point in their life.

Science-based toys create interest and willingness on the part of the learner. In the face of people who have a true calling for science, such opportunity only marks the beginning. In that beginning shall grow wonders that we can only imagine.

True to the tradition of geeky vacation destinations, one must not only enjoy but learn something as well.  Most family destinations can be termed geeky in a way although more of the geeky fun.  If one wishes to stay true to nature, there are actually geeky vacation tours which one can join.

Museums and Life Science Exhibits

Travelers who wish to know more about the places they visit should not forget the museums and life science exhibits offered.  Each exhibit can provide valuable information as to the place’s history as well as their culture and beliefs.  There are no two museums or exhibits that are exactly alike so there is always something new to learn from each. Contrary to common perception, this is far from a boring activity as many museums have become interactive, enjoining visitors to do more than just watch and look.

TV and Movie Sets

Fans of  TV shows and movies that have successively captured their imagination such as science-fiction adventures should include in their travel itinerary, the various TV and movie sets that have provided the fitting background for their favorite production.  Many production sets have been preserved and have served as tourist attractions such as those used for Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings.

Extraordinary Cruises

Cruises are always fun and exciting but how about an extraordinary cruise around the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station perhaps?  Going to places where few people would think of going is part of the thrill.  There are a lot of other unique off-the-beaten-path destinations found all over the world.  The less commercial they are, the better for discovery.

Recent Historical Places

Tourists are always being directed to historical places of long ago which most people can hardly identify with.  How about a change by opting to go to places that have made history whether for positive or negative reasons in the more recent times?  How about Chernobyl?  How about Japan’s tsunami restoration efforts? These are places that do not only make visitors look but also think seriously about what can be done to prevent such tragic occurrences.

Anything Techie

Any place that provides joy to techies are candidates for the ultimate geeky vacation spots.  Whether they are places of history or places of innovation, they will surely catch the interest of people who are certified believers in technology.  We are not simply talking about Silicon Valley here but other places as well that has become identified with technology.

Car Distance Sensors

February 28, 2013 By Teresa Martinez

Determining distance can be quite a problem for drivers in tight spaces for parking or situations that require sudden speed deceleration when another car cuts in front. Many car manufacturers are installing gadgets known as car distance sensors to assist drivers in this particular situation.  Each manufacturer calls it by their own name but the function is essentially the same which is to ensure that cars are able to maintain a safe distance from other cars and structures.

Distance sensor is just one of the latest additions to car gadgets enjoyed by today’s drivers.  Modern vehicles are really going the way of safety while designs and styles continue to be modified.  This is a sign that people are now considering the very important aspect of safe road use.

Safe road use not only protects the driver but also the other people who they share the road with.  It also protects properties along the way.  Drivers who are assisted by gadgets and equipment are more able to respond to varying road situations.

By providing adequate warning even before proximity really becomes dangerous enough, drivers’ judgment will be supported by something which that can actually measure the distance.  Car distance sensors use ultrasonic proximity detectors embedded in both the front and rear bumpers.  It basically relies on the reflection of sound waves.

These sensors however usually need to be replaced at some point because of its exposure to the elements.  A fail-safe mode is expected to detect malfunction which should warn drivers not to rely on the sensors and have them replaced at the soonest possible time.  Owners must be wary of extraordinarily quiet distance sensors since a working one usually gives off a clicking sound. A geeky attitude that favors safety is very much preferred for this purpose.
