One of the major hobbies that has a tendency to be identified with geeks is comic book collecting.  Comic books are actually associated with childhood interest thus fully grown adults who continue on with the hobby are not very many. They constitute a unique group of people who opted to pursue their interest on a much higher level than a childhood collection.

Collectors of any kind are a league of their own.  They pursue their interest with so much passion and dedication that could put to shame any childish obsession.  The good thing about most collectors is that they have found more reason to continue on while gaining some professional appreciation or even financial profit.

The intense interest in collecting comic books started during the height of the popularity of superhero characters such as Superman and Batman.  Marvel Comics and DC Comics have always dominated the comics publishing industry.  Even now, both publishers have brought their characters into the movie world, allowing them to expand their audience reach.

The renewed and larger interest of people on these characters cannot make comics collector any happier.  The continued exposure of characters in modern presentations help create more awareness helping perpetuate ideas that could have long been forgotten by the ordinary workings of time.  Collectors knew for a fact that their collections tend to appreciate more as more interest is created pertaining to the subject.

If comics collecting is a geeky hobby, it must be noted that it is something that can provide satisfaction and profit.  Some collectors are also into collecting comic book original art which is a separate and distinct interest.

Books for Geeks

It is not as if reading is not geeky enough for most people that they cannot help but associate certain books to geekiness.  The impression starts from associating certain topics to being geeky.  Whether true or not, reading these books can certainly provide readers with a fresh perspective in life.

Science fiction books and techy books are leading in the most wanted list.  The preoccupation with science among the young is not considered unusual although it tends to be so as people grow older especially when the interest is carried with much zealousness.  Interest in how- to books, tech philosophy books , and in books delving in discovery of how devices and gadgets work is quite high among certified geeks although such topics are equally as interesting with the general public.

Biography books are also quite popular among people with geeky nature because of their natural interest with the past.  It is a good thing that there are people who are inclined to this topic since understanding the past has made it possible to produce interesting readings of the present.  Studying history or lives of people is not necessarily only for the geeks.

Because of the long-standing association of computers with geeks, it it but a natural result for computer books to be associated with them which is not exactly bad since geeks apparently are rising up to be the latest “cool” group.  This is connected with the recognized usefulness of people who have extensive knowledge in computers.  Online reading also appears to be gaining an audience.

High School Yearbook- a Record of Memorable Geekiness

October 26, 2012 By Teresa Martinez

If there is one book in this world that could be a documented proof of people’ s geekiness, it would probably be the high school yearbook.  Elementary yearbooks are more forgiving since these are children we are talking about here.  Unfortunately, high school isn’t that way.  People can be as pressured as they were in their teens when their geeky high school pictures surface in the present time.

Yearbooks document student life like nothing else do.  It contains accomplishments, shining moments, and even embarrassing moments that will be the subject of many laughs many years after.  It also captures a student’s fashion statement at that certain point in time.

This is where much of the geekiness comes in particularly in the hair, clothes, and even the pose that seems to put the subjects in a certain period in time.  The thing with yearbook pictures is that they seldom catch the subjects in their most flattering angles.  Mos of the time, the opposite is achieved.

Big hair, braces, over-sized glasses, loud hair colors, and crazy clothes combination all seemed a good idea during the picture taking until they haunt people just when they have gone through their worst fashion days and settled for more mainstream choices.  Everyone will have at some point be photographed looking like a geek.  This is simply part of growing up.

It is worth saying that memories brought back by yearbooks are those of warm geekiness.  These were days when life was much simpler and the main problem was what clothes to wear or what hairstyle to choose.  These were the days when people didn’t even realize they would look geeky after a few years.
