The recent findings of a little known additive used to make baby bottles and re-useable microwaveable containers named bisphenol-A as a possible cause of some health issues more so in infants which is why the alarms were sounded. As it turns out, the chemical which is used to make baby bottles and other tough unbreakable plastics contain as an additive bisphenol-A which has been found to cause some endocrinal problems in children. People who use products that are commonly called polycarbonates will surely contain the errant chemical and is to be avoided when ever possible. Products such as refillable drink containers, sippy cups, microwaveable containers which are all clear are sure to fall under the category of polycarbonates. One sure way for those who wish to determine the type of plastic used is to look on the underside of the product where a recycle triangle is located with the number seven inside is a sign of polycarbonate type plastic. There could also be a letter mark that says BSA (bisphenol A) or PC (Polycarbonate). Without these apparent signs, there is no sure way to determine the plastic type thus caution should be observed.
For the general public, there is not much to be concerned about and the effects manifest themselves most in children less than 18 months. When using clear microwaveable utensils do not heat too much for excessive heat allows faster dissipation of the BSA out of the plastic into the foodstuff that is being heated. Plastic baby bottles should be boiled, emptied and allowed to cool before they are filled with formula to minimize the amounts of the chemical seeping into the baby’s milk. Refer to the attached toxicology report for more details.
This is another addition to the long list of banned chemicals that have allowed industrialists to provide for the needs and wants of the general public, that were hailed to be miracles of the industrial world that now plague us and may prove to be the answer to many unexplainable health issues we simply cannot explain.
