Geeks are almost always portrayed as bespectacled people who are either geniuses, weaklings or both.  Whether this is accurate or not is left to the people who are called geeky or nerdy to either admit or refute.  An eyeglass-wearing geek is more of a stereo-type rather than a representation of any truth.

The association of intelligence to a bespectacled person stems from the thinking that the need to wear eyeglasses comes from the preference of reading and acquiring unlimited knowledge through continuous study.  This conclusion is not exactly true in all instances since there are many who wear glasses because of vision and eye problems totally unrelated to acquiring knowledge or obtaining a specific level of intelligence.

In the movies, a nerd’s costume is not at all elaborate since a pair of eyeglasses will do.  The most confident good-looking actor is easily transformed with the use of eyeglasses into an underdog character who is expected to be bullied or ignored by other characters in the film.  Of course in the end, the geek or nerd triumphs over all challenges.

An interesting research in Australia conducted several years ago revealed that many people wore eyeglasses because of myopia or shortsightedness.  Instead of the expected introvertedness from eyeglass-wearing people, these people turned out to be actually agreeable and open. Studies such as this tend to shatter the myth that all people who wear eyeglasses are geeks or nerds.

Having said this, it is obvious that eyeglasses will always be associated with geekiness.  Black frame glasses is the universal symbol of geekiness.  In today’s times, it doesn’t really matter much since eyeglasses have become cool and fashionable.  With the way models and celebrities are using eyeglasses, it is sometimes unthinkable why such a fashionable object has become synonymous to geekiness.
