Geek culture isn’t just necessarily about entertainment. It’s also possible to take a lot of the technical aspects of the culture and combine them with serious societal topics. If it weren’t for the geeks taking on certain types of information flow, then who would do it?

When you think about online drug addiction and rehab material, fitness apps to help people get healthy, information flow that leads to gender equality in the workplace, and the war against fake news, you start to get an idea of the importance of how geeks can affect modern culture positively. Is Geek Culture a Boys’ Club? These Women Don’t Think So

It wasn’t so long ago that geek culture was synonymous with a boys’ club made up of sex-starved, socially inept basement dwellers who gathered in the back rooms of comic book stores or arcades. They were bullied and mocked, left on the outskirts of society where they formed communities where they could take shelter and share in their obsessions. How the tables have turned. Geek culture has been pushed into the mainstream, and the women who have always been part of the scene are stepping into the spotlight and working to retire those old, tired stereotypes. Female geeks and gamers of all stripes are stepping out and staking their claim despite the often misogynistic and sexist backlash that’s long been endemic in the community. [Read more…]

Are You a Geek at Heart?

On the hit Disney cartoon series, Recess, Vince Lasalle is forced to come to grips with the fact that his big brother Chad is exhibiting all the classic signs of being a geek. Early on in geek culture, it was easy to tell if a person was trending towards being a geek. If you had tape on your black horn rimmed glasses, a pocket protector, and lacked a healthy tan, then chances are you were trending in the geek fashion.

Showing a tendency to be good at math and science, and sitting around all day programming your computer, rather than playing sports with the guys was another classic way to tell that people were entrenched in geek culture. As geek culture grew, suspenders became another fashion trend that helped identify with the geek movement. But, this has lead many to ask what it means to be a geek today. [Read more…]
