Patchguard Hacking Decried By Microsoft

October 25, 2006 By gecko

Security software developer Authentium has made it known that it has been able to bypass the very contentious and controversial PatchGuard kernel protection feature of the Microsoft Vista operating system that will be released next year and Microsoft is up in arms about the news saying that the decision of Authentium to hack PatchGuard may cause more problems to users down the line.

The Microsoft officials were reacting to the move of Authentium to device a workaround method to get around PatchGuard in its software products. They said that this tactic is not a very smart move as Microsoft is always actively looking for ways to close any vulnerabilities or flaws that would result in any form of kernel interaction. This would make any kind of technology that depends on this tactic to become perpetually obsolete. What this would mean eventually, they said, is that users may inadvertently make their PCs more vulnerable to attacks and may even encounter problems with regards to the integration between Vista and other software.
