Do Geeks Have a Tendency Towards Neophile Personality?

December 31, 2012 By Teresa Martinez

A neophile is a person who is said to possess a personality characterized by a strong liking for novelty as opposed to tradition as well as repetitive and routinary actions.  People with this personality are also said to be easily bored and can develop an obsession for something in the desire to achieve novelty.  Neophiles are able to adapt easily to change even of the extreme variant.

Although geeky behavior is not synonymous to neophile personality, some people insist on the connection.  Others are ready to concede to the association but only in so far as forward or advanced thinking.  This is seen as a positive trait since forward thinking usually results to innovation and development.

Computer geeks appear to have the nearest appropriation of neophile characteristic.  This is one of the reasons being pointed to for the rapid change and progress in the computer industry.  This is not actually a far-fetched idea considering how fast changes are happening on the technological world.  Without such trait, people would have no frequent updates and modifications in techy products to look forward to.

The creation of something new incites so much excitement among neophiles and it is easy to imagine computer geeks having the same excitement whenever they are able to produce something new from their efforts.  Every new discovery is prompted by a desire for something different and better.  It is sort of similar to the adage that says “Necessity is the Mother of Invention”.  It comes with a twist however since the more applicable saying would probably be “Desire for Novelty is the Mother of Rapidly-Changing Technologies”. For the positive consequences of their serious intent for discovery, computer geeks deserve commendation.

Function Meets Fashion with USB Cuff Links

February 28, 2012 By Hannah

Geeks may be bullied all through high school, but once we enter the workforce we find our niche. Geeks rule the corporate world, climbing up the corporate ladder pretty quickly, especially those in the IT industry.

If you’re looking for the perfect fashion accessory to celebrate your success, why not get cuff links for your dress shirts? However, not just any cuff link will do. Why get a cuff link that serves only as a cuff link? Get one that will do more than that, like store your data.

Store your data and bring it wherever you go without fear of misplacing your USB flash drive by putting on some USB cuff links. You got that. USB cuff links.

You can find USB cuff links for $100 to more than $200 in online stores. These little gadgets actually look pretty snazzy and look exactly like your normal cuff links and are available in gunmetal and gold-plated finishes. Unfortunately, the mother of pearl gunmetal cuff link by Cuff Daddy that look specially nice is out of stock as of the moment.

If you don’t feel like toting around a USB drive, you can find other functional and geeky cuff links such as thermometer cuff links, watch cuff links, abacus cuff links, and compass cuff links. While these cuff links are just as functional as your USB cuff link, they are not as inconspicuous as USB cuff links and would not make for everyday wear. However, they are more affordable with prices ranging from $30 to $70.

Analog Format Loss Syndrome

June 21, 2011 By Nick

Nope, it’s not a disease, but rather the stark realization that your old vinyl records, VHS Tapes and black and white photos are fast becoming obsolete and forever destined for the garbage can. There is help though for the many baby boomers out there who do need help with such conversions in order for most analog gadgets and gizmos to have their contents converted into the proper digital format that would allow them to be used with your iPod or saved onto high quality DVD’s for eternity (well, not an eternity but as long as the DVD retains it’s ability to hold the information safe anyway for even they have life spans or expected time frames before they fail). Many technologies such as voice recordings on cassette tapes, old video on reel tapes, Black and white photos of the days of old and many other older analog technologies that have long been overstepped by the digital revolution.
For photos there are scanners that allow you to digitize them and convert them to your preferred format for storage and viewing. Old photos are sensitive and some even crumble due to time and climate conditions. Digitizing them makes them available for manipulation and restorations as well as playback as a slideshow on your PC or TV. Old VHS tapes can be digitized through several appliances you connect to the video in port or through the USB port that with accompanying software allows them to be converted into digital video formats and even DVD’s (this you’d best leave to the experts for it takes almost a day to convert a few hours of video but DIY is still possible and widely available). Old 8″ vinyl can be transferred onto your multimedia players through similar appliances that converts them to popular audio formats.
Lastly, this world is ruled by the law of supply and demand and as long as people need help with such analog to digital conversions, there will always be entrepreneurs who would provide the services necessary. Whether you aim to do it on your own or to hire a professional conversion firm, it’s up to you, but do it quick for technology changes as a very fast rate that it may again render today’s technology useless by tomorrow.
